Researchers Propose ‘Homemade Gun’ Might Be Used Instead Of Sniper Rifles

WASHINGTON — A new paper from researchers at Brigham Young University has proposed that the same homemade gun design that caused the death of Ammon E. Bundy could have been used to kill security guards at the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s summer residence during a 1983 incident known as the Lubavitcher Massacre.

The aforementioned homemade gun design, known as a “flashbang”, has been under investigation since Sunday’s incident. The man behind the flashbang, Rubin Brodsky, has indicated his willingness to meet investigators and, according to police, has volunteered to speak to prosecutors.

The new paper by BYU researchers Neil A. Van Noy, Ralph L. Harris, and Christopher A. Holden attempts to resolve several of the mysteries of the flashbang, including why it was used and whether it was shot or thrown. They also speculate on its potential future as a mass-killing weapon.

“We don’t know all the details, but a flashbang that explodes in a room in a house is a terrible weapon to use,” Van Noy, who authored the paper and is a fellow at the Linamar Group, told PhysOrg.com. “It’s an uncontrollable device, and it can kill you or maim someone. And it produces all kinds of unintended casualties.”

Brodsky reportedly used a homemade flashbang to set off a firework display at the Rebbe’s home in 1983, and the explosion injured several people, including one security guard, who subsequently died from his injuries. According to court documents in the shooting, Brodsky was originally a suspect, but charges were dropped against him because the victims were unable to identify him.

The new paper drew initial interest from a man who claimed to have used one of the grenades in the 1983 incident, but who lost track of it before the encounter. He wasn’t surprised by the use of the homemade flashbang on Sunday, given his own experience.
