The figures are based on the national mental health survey and include those who claim to eat no meat at all. They found that among 7,700 adults aged 16 and over, self-proclaimed vegetarians were less likely to have had mental health problems than meat eaters, with 14 per cent of those who claimed to be vegetarians having symptoms and 20 per cent of those who claimed to be meat eaters.

More than half (54 per cent) of all people surveyed disagreed with the statement: ‘I think it is alright to eat meat, provided that it has been prepared in a healthful way.’ However, researchers found that among vegetarians, 91 per cent agreed with the statement.
On average, meat eaters spend slightly more than £6.99 on meat per week, while vegetarians and vegans spent an average of £5.50.
More than half (53 per cent) of all people surveyed ‘completely agreed’ or ‘agreed’ that some people are more ethical because they eat less meat. In contrast, 92 per cent of vegetarians completely agreed or agreed that some people are more ethical because they eat less meat.
