Since weve seen her on breakout albums like The Pinkprint and in the BET BET Awards performance of X, MØs breakthrough has been steady, not overwhelming. When she steps on stage, MØ always looks like a total pro, like this is something shes spent years training for. In the clips from the BET show, that training has already paid off, as all her movements are flawless and she handled being the focus of the show pretty well. When hes not bashing Taye Diggs, MØs time in the spotlight has been spent with slow-build bangers like You and I, an old school love song that portrays a yearning for love that doesnt always end well. In addition to being an undeniable presence onstage, MØ is a songwriter with a strong vision, and that comes across in You and I. The song starts off slow, but soon the beat drops. In the following verse, MØs digression from the romantic movie they are talking about leads to an unexpected shift to a more somber, self-reflective tune. Theres no coming back from the emotional damage of love lost, but MØs optimistic outlook seems to suggest that when things eventually heal, you will be well-equipped to handle whatever comes your way.
In this era of high-energy trap, slow jams are a rarity. At most, we might get a song where Kendrick gives us a break from the action to make a catchy hook or two. Instead, Jay Rock gave us a bunch of songs that weren’t sexy or catchy, but that were all under five minutes. For the majority of its run, Rock was on top of his game, spitting songs that were always level-headed and contained some of his most memorable lines, like, Gave me a hundred, took my momma and knocked her off. But what Rock does best is step back and let his rough, uncut truth take over, as he does on Non-Fiction. If you were to ask anyone what it was like to be in one of the Big 3 camps as a teenager, Rock is the first person to give you the full story. Other MCs might tell you, I wasnt really a rapper, but Rock is quick to tell you, I came home with a gun on my hip, and I wasnt really looking to get in a war. No one told me not to carry a gun, I just did, and thats reality, no matter what camp you were in. Rock truly is a poet, and on Non-Fiction, he found time to explore the topics that matter, like what it means to be an artist, and whether rap music is truly making a difference. Its tough to get a feel for a rapper like Jay Rock without being able to hear him live, but we have an in a hit or miss kind of way with Sociopath, which he released as a free mixtape earlier this year. Its got the Rock vibe down, with a gritty, boom bap beat, but its also got his deep vocals, like he could be the next Aloe Blacc.
